Join A Registered Apprenticeship Program
The UA Local 189 Joint Apprenticeship Training Program (JATC) offers the next generation of pipefitters, welders, plumbers and other skilled trade workers the opportunity to learn from the best in the industry while also earning a living wage.
Since the 1950s, the JATC has provided continuing education courses to local apprentices who have gone on to become master journeymen.
What type of work do United Association members perform?
Plumbers install, maintain and repair drinking water, waste and ventilating systems, as well as wastewater treatment systems.
Pipefitters install and repair piping systems in projects ranging from residential to high-tech and extremely sensitive and sophisticated facilities.
Welders cut and join a variety of materials, from steel, cast iron and plastic to complex and specialized products.
Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) service technicians install, maintain and repair heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

The mission of the Local 189 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee Educational Trust Fund is to equip members of Local 189 with educational resources for developing the skills of their Apprentices and Journeyworkers.
By facilitating the training needs of the membership, we maximize their employability and prepare them for industry changes. We are committed to making training opportunities available, allowing members to acquire new skills and remain competitive in the industry regardless of geography.

Application Period:
Apply in-person on the first Tuesday of each month between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Program Length: 5 years
Classroom: 1,000 total hours
On-the-Job: 10,000 total hours
Plumber, Pipefitter and Welder Apprenticeship

- All applicants shall be at least 18 years of age.
- An exception may be made when an applicant is 17 years of age at the time of application and otherwise meets all qualifications; such applicant may be rated, ranked, and placed on the Pool of Eligibles list. Such applicant must provide proof that a graduation certificate or GED has been awarded and must be 18 years of age prior to being indentured by the JATC.
- A photo I.D. is required to apply.
- Must live in one of the following counties: Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Hocking, Licking, Madison, Marion, Perry, Pickaway, Ross, or Union County.
- Have reliable transportation.
- Legally eligible to work in the U.S. and documentation showing such must be provided upon acceptance into the program.
- Pass a drug test.
- After picking up the application, applicants must return the application within two weeks with the following items:
- Copy of high school diploma, GED, or a letter from your high school stating you are on track to graduate in June of the application year.
- Copy of high school grade transcript or
- GED Scores.
- Birth certificate
- Application fee: $60 cashier’s check or money order made payable to the Plumbers and
- Pipefitters JATC.
- DD-214, if applicable.
- All applicants shall be at least 18 years of age.
HVAC Apprenticeship

- High school diploma or GED
- Driver’s license
- 18 years of age prior to entering the program
- Provide employment eligibility documentation.
- Submit to a pre-employment drug test.
- To apply to this program, applicants must submit a resume, which will be distributed to the signatory MES contractors.
If you are hired by one of the contractors, you will be placed in the program after a probationary period is fulfilled.
