What type of work do sheet metal workers perform?
There are many different opportunities for the men and women who work in the sheet metal trade through the following crafts:
Architectural Sheet Metal: A combination of technical skills and artistry is used to shape metal into useful and beautiful forms. This work may also include building decoration and shaping metal to create attractive, long-lasting designs.
Commercial HVAC: Tradesmen and tradeswomen work on high-volume mechanical systems that deliver heated and cooled air to commercial buildings.
Detailing: Sheet metal detailing is considered CAD (computer-aided drafting) work to produce detailed two- and three-dimensional drawings of the major systems that make buildings comfortable and safe.
Industrial Sheet Metal Welding: In this field, journeymen make machines used in a number of industries.
Residential HVAC: These service technicians work on installing duct systems for builders in the housing industry.
Service and Refrigeration: Install, test, repair and maintain refrigeration systems.
Testing, Adjusting and Balancing: TAB technicians ensure that air and water are delivered efficiently, quietly and safely throughout a building.

SMW Apprenticeship
Program Length: 4 years
Classroom Hours: Minimum 576 total hours
On-the-Job Hours: Minimum 6,000 total hours
- Must be at least 17 years of age
- Must have the physical ability to perform the work of the trade
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license
- Birth certificate
- Social Security number
- Pass a drug test and a background check
