Central Ohio Building Trades complete quickest build in Amgen history

Amgen has opened its newest and most advanced manufacturing facility in Central Ohio, expanding its global operations network.

Based in California, Amgen is a global biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets innovative medicines for serious illnesses.

The $365 million facility officially broke ground on Nov. 5, 2021, and took 26 months to build—the quickest build in Amgen’s history.
Dorsey Hager, C/COBCTC Executive Secretary-Treasurer, said the total cost of the project increased after additional support buildings were added to the project.

The 300,000-square-foot facility in New Albany was built to package and distribute Amgen medicines that treat cancers, cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases across the country.

Due to the biotech arena being a highly government-regulated sector, the project required highly skilled and highly trained members of the building trades to perform the construction.

The project created nearly 500 jobs for affiliated members of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council.

Its completion not only marked a milestone for Amgen but also underscored the vital role of skilled trades in shaping the future of biotech manufacturing in Central Ohio.

Amgen Groundbreaking

$900 million expansion

In April 2025, Amgen announced a $900 million expansion to its New Albany facility, increasing its total investment in Central Ohio to over $1.4 billion and bringing the number of jobs created to 750.

The expansion is on track to be completed in 2027 and spans 418,000 square feet.

“Ohio has built a strong foundation for economic development, which has led companies like Amgen to see Ohio as a premier destination for growth,” Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said in a statement. “We are happy to see Amgen deepen its commitment to our state and look forward to the innovation and economic impact it will drive.”
