On June 16, The Columbus Dispatch reported that Google secured 85 acres in Licking County, purchasing the undeveloped site at 2565 Harrison Road Northwest in Johnstown for $63 million.
This strategic location sits directly across from an Amazon datacenter complex in the New Albany International Business Park.
While Google hasn’t announced a construction timeline, the company confirmed that this acquisition ensures space for future growth as its business needs grow.
If developed as a datacenter, the Johnstown site would become Google’s fourth campus in Central Ohio, joining existing datacenter facilities in New Albany, Lancaster and Lockbourne.
This land purchase follows Google’s June 2024 announcement of an additional $2.3 billion investment in its three current Central Ohio campuses.
These datacenters provide the backbone for essential Google services such as Gmail, Search, Maps, Cloud and YouTube, which are used by millions worldwide.
More jobs for the region’s construction workers
Since breaking ground in New Albany in 2019, Google has invested over $6.7 billion in regional datacenters with all work performed under Community Benefits Agreements, creating thousands of construction jobs for affiliated members of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council.
The partnership between Google and the region’s union trades is strong and only poised to grow stronger if development moves forward in Johnstown.
Thanks to ongoing projects from Google, Amazon, Meta and more, Central Ohio’s reputation as the “Silicon Heartland” continues to rise.
It’s not just location that draws these tech giants to Central Ohio. It’s the skilled, union workforce that delivers safe, on-time and on-budget results.
Since the first Amazon datacenter broke ground in 2016, affiliated C/COBCTC members have become experts in constructing world-class datacenters, setting the standard for quality and reliability.
As new opportunities emerge, the C/COBCTC remains committed to building the region’s future, one project and one job at a time.
