Quality Training

Invest In The Best

The union building trades have earned a reputation as being the best-skilled construction workers in North America, and this is largely due to quality training.

After all, you cannot be the best if you are not taught to be the best.

Quality training is one of the main ways affiliated members of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades separate themselves from their competitors.

Through Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committees (JATCs), our affiliated unions provide free, quality apprenticeship training and journeymen upgrade training courses. At state-of-the-art training centers, certified instructors teach continuously updated curriculums containing the latest industry and safety technology for the best training in the construction industry.

A union-trained craftsman receives certified training, including safety and skills training, at no cost to the union member. Each of our affiliated JATCs provides safety training both on the job and through Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) construction outreach training programs.

The construction industry relies heavily on skilled craftsmanship, so apprenticeship and upgrade training programs give our union members the skills and knowledge they need to be fully productive trades workers. Union journeymen are kept current and up-to-date in the newest technologies, helping to ensure they work both productively and efficiently on the jobsite.

Statistics show that union training programs significantly outperform their non-union counterparts in enrollment levels, graduation rates, caliber of overall curriculum and training facility quality.

High-Quality Registered Apprenticeship Training

Registered Apprenticeship Programs

The foundation of quality training rests with our affiliated JATCs.

Through their Registered Apprenticeship Programs, apprentices receive a debt-free education as the apprentices earn a livable wage while learning new skills.

This means they receive a blend of hands-on training and classroom instruction, ensuring they develop the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their careers. Apprentices earn a livable wage as they learn on-the-job skills from journeymen, combined with classroom training to help them learn the mathematics skills and theories needed to perform their jobs. Plus, they also earn industry-leading safety certifications to help them stay safe on the jobsite. Some trades require apprentices to earn various certifications documenting that they have mastered the skills and techniques required to perform their jobs.

Depending on the trade, an apprenticeship program could last anywhere from three to five years.

During this time, apprentices not only receive livable wages but also receive full-family medical benefits and begin to invest in their retirement.

Journeyman Upgrade Training

Topping out as a journeyman does not mean the end of training.

Journeymen receive upgrade training to ensure their skillsets remain the best in the business.

While the requirements are different for each trade, it is common for journeymen to take training to upgrade their skills, improve their efficiency, learn how to use the latest technology or take new courses to advance their careers.
