What type of work do United Association members perform?

Plumbers install, maintain and repair drinking water, waste and ventilating systems, as well as wastewater treatment systems.

Pipefitters install and repair piping systems in projects ranging from residential to high-tech and extremely sensitive and sophisticated facilities.

Welders cut and join a variety of materials, from steel, cast iron and plastic to complex and specialized products.

Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) service technicians install, maintain and repair heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

It all begins with an apprenticeship through the UA Local 162 JATC, where apprentices are transformed into highly skilled journeymen.

Training to become a plumber, pipefitter or HVACR service technician is available through a Registered Apprenticeship Program offered by Local 162 and sponsored by the Dayton Area Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. This program is registered with the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship & Training and Ohio State Apprenticeship Council.

Application Period: Apply in person on specific days

Program Length: 5 years
Classroom Hours:  1,000 total hours
On-the-Job Hours: 8,500-10,000 total hours

Other Requirements:
  • You must be 18 years old.
    • High school graduate with:
      A 2.0 cumulative GPA
    • Two full years of math and have at least a C average in each course (C- not acceptable).
    • One full year of science and have at least a C average in the course (C- not acceptable).
    • Exception to above: Additional adult or college training in math, science, or trade-related classes and present proof of a grade of B or better with transcript, grade card or certificate.
  • A GED applicant must have a GED certificate, test results, and a total score of 145 or higher.
    • A score of 145 or higher on the math portion of the test.
    • A score of 145 or higher on the science portion of the test.
    • Exception to the above: Additional adult or college training in math, science or trade-related classes and present proof of a grade of C or better with transcript, grade card or certificate.
  • All Applicants must provide an official sealed high school transcript.
    • High school graduate transcript must show the date of graduation.
    • High School transcript for GED applicants must show grades for years of high school completed.
    • Transcripts must be placed in a sealed envelope by your high school and remain unopened to be considered official.
  • Provide the following documents:
    • If you were in the military, a copy of your DD214.
    • A copy of your birth certificate
    • Provide a valid Ohio driver’s license
  • Required to take a pre-employment test
  • Pay a non-refundable fee of $35.
  • Pass a drug test.
  • Apply in-person.
  • Appear for an interview.
