Lower.com Field Project

Affiliated C/COBCTC Local Unions complete project on time despite pandemic

Tradesmen and tradeswomen of Central Ohio completed work on the new Columbus Crew soccer stadium, Lower.com Field, just in time for the team to host their first match. The new stadium broke ground on Oct. 10, 2019, and took a little over 18 months to complete. The stadium officially opened in July of 2021. Work on the $314 million stadium created roughly 500 construction jobs, most of which went to members of Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council-affiliated unions. The 460,000-square-foot stadium has 20,371 seats, a suite-level lounge, a club bar, a beer garden, a roof that covers every seat and other amenities to ensure every fan in attendance has a great experience. Although the COVID-19 pandemic slowed construction, the affiliated members of the C/COBCTC were still able to complete the project on time.

Construction crews worked challenging and aggressive shifts to complete the project.

The new stadium, located in the Arena District, is in the heart of Columbus, so fans can feel connected and closely cheer on their favorite soccer team. Lower.com Field replaced the old stadium, MAPFRE, which was located miles away from downtown — a location that caused some fans to feel disconnected from the team. Jimmy Haslam, part of the Haslam Sports Group, which owns the Crew and the Cleveland Browns, said the new stadium was built as part of an incentive to keep the team from moving to Austin, Texas. The C/COBCTC invites you to visit Lower Field to support the Columbus Crew and see the work performed by its highly skilled and highly trained affiliated members.
