America’s Workforce Radio Segment: Major push underway to recruit minorities into apprenticeships

Apprenticeships offer everyone a chance to earn a good living and retire with dignity.

America’s Workforce Radio host Ed “Flash” Ferenc and Dorsey Hager, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council, discussed the benefits of the apprenticeship model.

The trades offer all people a chance to receive a free education, avoid costly college debt and have the opportunity to live a middle-class life. By going into an apprenticeship, men and women can earn while they learn, meaning they receive a livable wage while learning the skills necessary to become a journeyman tradesman.

This on-the-job experience allows apprentices to learn the trade from experienced journeymen, gaining valuable insight and knowledge on a number of different aspects of their job. Besides learning on the jobsite, apprentices also receive free, mandatory classroom instruction, where they are taught many of the fundamentals and advanced concepts they will use throughout their career.

The affiliated C/COBCTC trades are pushing this message to minority groups, as they work to diversify their unions by bringing in men and women of different races and backgrounds.

The apprenticeship model, Hager said, is an excellent way to help get minorities out of poverty and into a middle class lifestyle.

Hager also updated Ferenc on a Memorandum of Understanding to build the Franklin County Correction Center Project and several other area projects.
