Union trades lead the way building $250 million Pharmavite Facility in New Albany

Central Ohio’s health and life sciences sector continues to grow with the opening of Pharmavite’s $250 million, 225,000-square-foot facility, built mainly by members of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council.

Pharmavite, the company behind brands like Nature Made and MegaFood, officially opened its doors in New Albany on May 8.

The project included a two-line manufacturing operation, a 17,661-square-foot central utility building, warehousing and laboratories.

Located just down the road from the future home of the Intel semiconductor plant, Pharmavite’s cutting-edge facility is a testament to the region’s rising status as a center for science, technology and advanced manufacturing.

According to Dorsey Hager, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the C/COBCTC, roughly 400 members of the building trades completed the project in 16 months.

The facility will operate as Pharmavite’s Gummy Innovation Center of Excellence, manufacturing vitamin gummies for the Nature Made and MegaFood brands while driving research and advancing product innovation.

More pharmaceutical announcements in Central Ohio

Pharmavite’s grand opening comes on the heels of another major pharmaceutical announcement.

In late April, AMGEN announced a $900 million expansion of its New Albany facility, creating between 800 and 1,200 jobs for members of the region’s union building trades.

This will be the largest life sciences and pharmaceutical manufacturing expansion in the state’s history, bringing the company’s total investment in Ohio to $1.4 billion.

As Central Ohio draws increasing investment, the successful completion of the Pharmavite project raises the bar for future developments.

Currently, more than $6 billion in investments are flowing into the New Albany International Business Park, with more projects to come.

Hager viewed the Pharmavite and AMGEN projects as powerful examples of the skill and flexibility demonstrated by C/COBCTC’s affiliated members.

“Our members have become very in-depth about the skills and technology needed to build and maintain many of these pharmaceutical facilities that are being built here now and will continue to be built in the future,” he said.

The building trade’s successful execution of these complex pharmaceutical projects demonstrates a high level of skill, professionalism and a proven ability to meet the industry’s specialized demands, solidifying its reputation as experts in pharmaceutical work.
