The City of Columbus recently finalized the purchase of the James A. Karnes Building, with plans to turn the site into the new Franklin County Municipal Court.
The city previously agreed to purchase the property from Franklin County for $7 million, paying half in 2022 and the other half last month.
According to Dorsey Hager, Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer, the James A. Karnes building, located at 410 S. High Street, will be demolished and the new courthouse will be built there. The site is across the street from the existing courthouse.
The project will be done under a Community Benefits Agreement, Hager added.
More job opportunities for affiliated members
The project, still in the design phase, will create about 600 union construction jobs for affiliated members of the C/COBCTC.
All of the crafts will be needed for the project, Hager said.
“The new municipal courthouse is a much-anticipated project that has been in the works for a while,” Hager said. “Mayor Ginther’s commitment to using a Community Benefits Agreement will provide career opportunities for residents of Columbus and Central Ohio, with a focus on our most underserved population – women, people of color and veterans.”
WCMH-TV reported that construction will begin in late 2025, with work lasting through early 2029.
As of right now, there is no date set for the demolition of the existing building.
