The seventh annual Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council Dollars Against Diabetes (D.A.D.’s) Day Clay Shoot was a fun morning for affiliated members of the building trades, thanks to a good turnout and strong sponsor support.
The event was held at Black Wing Shooting Center in Ostrander, where 11 teams competed. The team from IBEW Local 683 took home the top honors after the two-hour shoot on Sept. 14.
C/COBCTC Executive Secretary-Treasurer Dorsey Hager was pleased by the success of the event and said this year’s shoot had high attendance and raised nearly $3,000 for diabetes research.
“This was one of our biggest events in shoot history,” Hager said. “The weather cooperated, and it was a perfect day for camaraderie as we raised money for a good cause.”
The shoot concluded at noon, and the teams celebrated the event’s success with lunch and prizes.
History of D.A.D.’s Day
Dollars Against Diabetes is an annual campaign spearheaded by North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) and supported by state and local building trades councils nationwide.
The C/COBCTC has raised roughly $130,000 toward diabetes research since 1988.
Since its creation, the D.A.D.’s Day campaign has contributed over $57 million to the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), located at the University of Miami in Florida.
As one of the world’s largest and most advanced centers, the DRI is dedicated to discovering a biological cure by restoring natural insulin production and stabilizing blood sugar levels, all with minimal additional risks.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), diabetes is the eighth leading cause of death in the U.S. Over 38 million Americans have diabetes, which is more than 11 percent of the population.
