Massive billion dollar projects will anchor what is expected to be a record setting construction season for members of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council.
Dorsey Hager, Executive Secretary of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council, said the demand for journeymen in the greater Columbus area will exceed last year’s need.
Three projects – a data center and two medical centers – lead the list of projects, which all top the billion dollar mark.
The first phase of a $1 billion Facebook Data Center has already started, as site preparation is underway in New Albany.
Meanwhile, work is underway to move Cannon Drive, which will free up developable land for a proposed 840-bed Wexner Medical Center hospital tower. The tower, along with the construction of an ambulatory center, which would include outpatient operating rooms, urgent care with a 23-hour observation unit, endoscopy unit, pre-anesthesia center, diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology.
Design work is now beginning on the hospital tower, which cannot break ground until the Cannon Drive relocation project is complete.
The first phase of the $160 million Franklin County Jail project, numerous other projects at The Ohio State University and a Columbus fire station, constructed under a Community Benefits Agreement, will also start this year.
