Hager and AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discuss the Georgia Senate runoff election. A victory by at least one Democrat will give Democrats the Senate majority, which is good for the building trades and organized labor. With a Senate majority, he believes Democrats will impose their will and enact desired legislation, such as the PRO Act. Conversation then turned to the Driving Futures Program, which is sister program to Building Futures. Hager discussed the need for licensed commercial drivers in Central Ohio and who this pre-apprenticeship program helps members of the underserved community overcome employment obstacles and get a good job in order to live a middle class lifestyle. Lastly, they talked about recruiting women into the building trades. Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther recently hosted an outreach event and made the pitch that the building trades is a great industry for women.

Hager and AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discuss the results of the recent election. Democrats won every race in Franklin County except for two races. Hager believes the effort to elect Democrats in Franklin County needs to be duplicated throughout the state, especially in Cuyahoga County, where numbers were once again down. He said Ohio is a red state and Democrats need to change their messaging to better explain their principles to Republicans. He believes there are a number of items in which members of both parties support and they need to focus on those items. They also discussed a video recently shot by BMA Media Group to help promote the Building Futures Program, what the program offers and promotes careers in the building trades. Lastly, Hager highlighted how employees from one area non-profit organized themselves.

In coordination with a contractor and the city, the trades hosted a career fair at the site. Following all safety precautions, they exposed minority high school students to careers in the building trades. Talk then turned to Columbus City Council discussing a Wage Theft ordinance, which just passed. Hager also talked about the new General President of the International Association of the Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers.

Hager said he has met with Cupp on several occasions and described Cupp as a bright and fair-minded individual, who is an advocate for the building trades. Conversation then turned to House Bill 6 and Hager said if legislators repeal the bill, he would like to see them replace it with something else in order to save the thousands of jobs, including building trades jobs, the nuclear plant’s create. Discussion then turned to the upcoming election. The two also discussed the C/COBCTC’s annual D.A.D.’s Day Clay Shoot, which raises funds to find a cure for diabetes.

Hager and AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discuss the current state of work in central Ohio. Work continues on the data centers and all other major projects are on schedule. Additionally, work on the highly anticipated Hilton Hotel expansion has begun. Unfortunately, multiple projects at The Ohio State University have been put on hold. With lots of work going on, the building trades are in need of members. In July, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther hosted a virtual building trades career fair as part of a Community Benefits Agreement. Major emphasis was placed on four trades, who are in immediate need of people to join their union. Hager and Ferenc then discussed the nation’s infrastructure situation. Besides roads and bridges, he wants to see an investment in the electrical grid and powerhouses. Hager also provided some insight into the college football scene, including how the coronavirus pandemic will affect the Buckeyes.

Hager and AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc talk about the Hilton Hotel expansion project, Wexner Medical Center Tower and a massive data center, which all remain on track. All precautions are begin taken by contractors and building trades members to help prevent exposure to COVID-19. Talk then turned to politics, as the building trades held their endorsement interviews and screened a total of nearly 70 candidates, spanning a wide range of political races. Lastly, they spoke about the Union Sportsman’s Alliance. Unfortunately, USA had to cancel their dinner at the Plumbers and Pipefitters hall due to pandemic. However, the C/COBCTC will be a sponsor for the IUPAT Clay Shoot in Bucyrus.

According to Hager, jobsites are taking the illness seriously and if someone on the job tests positive for COVID-19, the job is shut down for a few days for cleaning. Discussion then turned from the jobs outlook to a renewed attack on Prevailing Wage. Lastly, they spoke about the C/COBCTC’s annual Dollars Against Diabetes (D.A.D.s) Clay Shoot, which was postponed to September due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hager and AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discussed the recent announcement by the North America’s Building Trades Union of standardized nationalized construction jobsite safety guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic. In Ohio, the construction industry was deemed essential and Hager says a number of contractors are taking measures to keep his members safe. Right now, about 95 percent of projects are fully staffed. Hager also took part in a Facebook Live panel discussion regarding essential workers held by Franklin County Commissioner John O’Grady and said people and companies should patronize those local companies, who provide basic human dignities such as health insurance. Talk then turned to the Ohio Primary Election, where the big push for the building trades was getting their members elected into central committee seats.

Listen to Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer Dorsey Hager, as he makes his monthly appearance on American’s Workforce Radio. Hager and AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discussed the effects of the coronavirus on construction within his jurisdiction. Construction has been deemed essential in Ohio and Hager said the members are doing an excellent job, despite the circumstances. He also credited the business managers, business representatives and contractors as well for their efforts. He also discussed how he and his affiliated unions are trying to keep the industry moving forward during this time, especially as many other industries are forced to temporarily shutter. Besides dealing with the issues posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Hager also talked about the importance of health insurance, which is part of the C/COBCTC fair contracting policy. This crisis has highlighted the importance of providing employees with good health insurance. They also spoke about the legislature moving Ohio’s Primary Election Day to April 28, and it must all be done via mail.

Hager and AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discussed a building trades union leadership conference, which took place in January and the upcoming North America’s Building Trades Unions Legislative Conference. They then talked about the makeup of the current National Labor Relations Board, and how it is changing established labor laws. Discussion then turned to the Driving Futures Program, where nine of the participants graduated from this pilot program and six have already been placed in jobs where they are represented by the Teamsters Union. The other three participants are currently deciding between offers of employment by multiple companies.

Hager and AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discussed the Third Friday Democratic Luncheon. Hager was asked to speak at this luncheon on labor and politics. He explained to the group how the building trades are working to create a building trades coalition in the Statehouse. Hager discussed the passage of the PRO Act and stressed the importance of So-Called “Right to Work” and Prevailing Wage. Conversation then changed to the situation in Virginia, where the Democratic-controlled legislator killed an attempt to repeal So-Called “Right to Work” legislation. Lastly, Hager talked about passing of Mark Dempsey, who died in mid-January.

In December, building trades members participated in two major events – The Charity Newsies and the St. Stephen’s Community House 65th Annual Christmas Cares-Unions Share Food Giveaway. Discussion transitioned to Teamsters Local 284, which helps with the Driving Futures program. Other topics Hager and Ferenc talked about included an attack on Prevailing Wage and the difference in safety between union and non-union construction workers.
