Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer Dorsey Hager made his monthly appearance on America’s Workforce Radio and spoke to host Ed “Flash” Ferenc about Columbus politics.
Rob Dorans, Esq., legal counsel for Affiliated Construction Trades (ACT) Ohio, was appointed to an open seat on Columbus City Council. Dorans was appointed to fill the unexpired term of former Councilman Michael Stinziano, who resigned in late February in anticipation of being sworn in as the next Franklin County Auditor. A second-generation IBEW member and a major advocate of the labor movement, Dorans will have to run for the seat this November.
Talked then turned from local politics to statewide politics, as House Bill 78, which would make Prevailing Wage optional for communities and schools, was pulled from committee prior to any discussion. Ohio Speaker of the House Larry Householder kept his promise to the building trades and killed the proposed legislation.
Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio state legislators agreed to increase the gas tax by $0.105 per gallon. Other notable items within the transportation bill included an increase in the tax on diesel fuel, a yearly tax on hybrids and electric cars and the elimination of the front license plate beginning on July 1, 2020.
Hager then discussed a free health physical, sponsored by the NABTU, for members of the building trades who worked at Department of Energy (DOE) sites. Hager said it was the most thorough physical he received and urged all tradesmen and tradeswomen who worked on DOE jobsites to take advantage of this free program.
