During his monthly appearance on America’s Workforce Radio, Dorsey Hager, Executive Secretary-Treasurer for the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council, told show host, Ed “Flash” Ferenc, how a court ruling will impact voter rights in Ohio.
Ohio Republicans eliminated “Golden Week,” which is a week where Ohio residents can register to vote and then actually vote.
A Federal Appeals Court ruling found this constitutional and with a 4-4 split in the U.S. Supreme Court, Hager said any appeal to the nation’s highest court would be fruitless. By not appointing judges, Congress is allowing the next U.S. president to gain full control of the courts, he said.
Hager discussed a major issue facing the construction industry – Ohio’s Unemployment Fund solvency problem.
The state’s Unemployment Fund is facing a major solvency issue, as there are not enough funds should there be a downturn in the economy. Hager explained how ACT Ohio is leading the way to represent the construction industry in this issue, as a decrease in benefits could lead to an exodus of highly-trained and highly-skilled construction workers.
