Dorsey Hager awarded the George Meany Community Service Award

Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer Dorsey Hager attended the 65th Annual George Meany Award banquet on April 11, along with various elected officials, labor leaders and members of the building trades.

The George Meany Award was established by the AFL-CIO to recognize union members who have made a significant contribution to the youth of their communities by volunteering in Boy Scouts of America programs.

At the banquet, Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer Dorsey Hager was awarded the George Meany Community Service Award. It was presented by Columbus City Council President and IBEW 683 member Rob Dorans.Hager and Dorans at the awards.

Mark Fluharty, retired Executive Director of the Central Ohio Labor Council AFL-CIO, nominated Hager for the award for his work with the Building Futures program.

The Building Futures program was designed to provide members of underserved communities with life skills and basic construction skills in order to prepare them for a building trades apprenticeship.

The program helps participants overcome challenges that prevent them from beginning a construction career in the building trades while showing them the pathway to a middle-class life.

“It was an honor to win the community service award,” Hager said. “The team we have assembled helps make the Building Futures program one of the best pre-apprenticeship programs in the country. This program is changing lives.”

The ceremony lasted three hours and was held at the Villa Milano Banquet and Conference Center in Columbus.
