Hager is featured speaker at Alberta Building Trades Conference

You do not want to miss Dorsey Hager’s October appearance on America’s Work Force Radio.

Dorsey Hager

Dorsey Hager, C/COBCTC Executive Secretary-Treasurer

Hager, Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer, and AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc discussed the recent trip Hager took to Alberta, Canada, where he was one of the featured speakers at the Alberta Building Trades Conference. He discussed the C/COBCTC Community Benefit Agreement with the City of Columbus, which was signed on Oct. 31, 2017. This was a historic CBA, as it signified the first time the City of Columbus agreed to only use C/COBCTC affiliated members on a city project. The CBA ensured residents of Columbus, Franklin County and other contiguous counties perform all of the work to construct Columbus Fire Station No. 35. It also called for the C/COBCTC to host apprenticeship-recruitment fairs that target the city’s minority, female and low-income residents.

While at the conference, Hager also discussed the Columbus Building Futures Program. He explained how the program is still a work in progress, but is providing some Franklin County low-income minority residents a pathway to the middle class, and good-paying union construction jobs.

Besides the Alberta Building Trades conference, Hager and Ferenc spoke about a new idea to promote apprenticeships to middle school students. The Building Trades Pilot Boot Camp is a new program created by the C/COBCTC designed to expose middle school students to careers in the building trades. Hager said the program will begin next year, when students from one area middle school spend a week at the Electrical Trades Center, where they will learn about many of the different trades, apprenticeships and what high school courses are needed to enter a registered apprenticeship program.

Hager and Ferenc also talked about an upcoming Minority Contractor Outreach Event on Oct. 23, the Browns season and Indians playoff baseball. Click here to listen to the entire segment.
