Executive Secretary Treasurer for the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council, Dorsey Hager and Ed “Flash” Ferenc, host of America’s Workforce Radio, talked about the upcoming May Primary election.
Besides election talk, Hager talked about the recent North America’s Building Trades Union 2018 Legislative Conference. Local, regional and state building trades leaders from throughout the country attended the annual event, which was held in Washington, D.C.
Hager said members spent the first day performing community service, including cleaning the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
He attended a workshop on pre-apprentice readiness, where he gained ideas he will implement in Columbus.
Speakers during the conference talked on a number of topics such as multi-employer pension reform and other issues important to the building trades, including Prevailing Wage, So-Called “Right to Work” policies and infrastructure.
Besides attending the annual conference, Hager has been busy in the Columbus area.
He testified in front of the Franklin County Commissioners on behalf of Cornell Robertson, the Franklin County Engineer, about a $5 increase on vehicle registration. There is less money going to the Engineer’s office, which is limiting how much the County Engineer can do, such as road and bridge maintenance and upgrades. This increase will not only help pay for projects, but provide good-paying jobs to members of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades.
In addition to discussing jobs, Hager spent a few minutes talking about one of the region’s most influential labor leaders.
Walt Workman, Executive Director of the Central Labor Council, retired. Hager called Workman a Columbus and Central Ohio labor icon and staple since the mid-1970s. The Navy veteran was a meat cutter by trade, and went on to lead organized labor in central Ohio. Workman’s last day is June 16.
They also talked a little bit about Cavalier playoff basketball. To listen to the entire interview, click here.
